Kia is South Korea’s oldest car company, beginning in 1944 as a bicycle manufacturer. The name is a combination of two words which roughly translate to ‘rising out of asia’. The company gradually transitioned to automobiles, but was forced to stop between 1981-1985 by dictator Chun Doo-Hwan who forced them to produce only light trucks. In 1986, Kia returned to the car market in partnership with Ford.
In August 2014 Kia received international attention when Pope Francis personally chose to use a Kia Soul for his visit to South Korea. Kia is also quickly developing a reputation for innovation in hybrid technologies.
